Americans come here to teach but in the process learn they have a lot to be taught as well. I remember a specific instance in which my colleague Jack said, “I realized I’ve been pronouncing ‘Himalayas’ wrong this whole time”. Obviously that’s just a little instance, but it goes a long way in showing that we, as Americans, live in our own little bubble of bias confirmation. Our society is constantly telling us that the way we speak, act, and learn is correct, and only once we break out of that bubble and put ourselves in unfamiliar environments is when we truly learn.
